The New Art Centre entrance sculpture - signage

Brief                 Create signage and information boards, lighting and a sculpture to heighten
the presence on the High Street, of the New Art Centre

Concept            The profile of the art centre needed to be raised and depict and represent a sense
of what it is about. The alleyway leading to the art centre leads off the High Street
and has daily vehicle use. My design is in 3 sections:

Banners:
7 triangular spectrum colour banners to be up lit, and to have a design on a colour theme printed on banner material, designed by the in house artists.

Signage: 3 notice boards - one to give information about the centre, one to show the café menu and one to be used to display current event posters and also, high street signage. For this I picked a bold font for visibility and the letters NAC seemed to work into the primary forms of the square, triangle and circle, which in my practice are core influential forms.

Sculpture: A stainless steel sculpture based on a stylised eye, this will be placed centrally on a sleeper bridge that crosses the alleyway, and incorporates lighting.

I did the drawings and entered the piece for planning consent which was approved by Medway Council with the suggestion on their first site visit being- can you make it bigger. So I did.

People were resistant to stray of the High Street and investigate so when some funding was received the best stage to start with was the signage and information boards. This was installed in time for the summer festival 2006 and has helped increase footfall and has not been vandalised.

Following the success of the first section, the signage, I  recently received the funding to create and install the second stage of the commission, the Sculpture and Bridge, December 2007.

The design had to be altered slightly, as sleepers would have been too heavy to use as a whole bridging section. Therefore we incorporated stainless tubing, which made a great alternative and fitted well with the overall concept and design.
