Featuring a counter counting down in days to the 2012 Olympics

Time                Unveil on 23 January 2007 – this being 2012 days to London 2012

The initial meeting with Bob Dimond was three months before installation.

Rationale          The brief was vague so Paula was able to give it her own interpretation.

Due to the tight time frame a council location seemed best suited to avoid complex planning issues, so the garden at the Visitors Centre in Rochester was agreed.

Bob Dimond also wanted the sculptures form as the basis for the council’s 2012 logo.

After various thoughts, Paula decided to keep the visual appearance simple and site specific. This was done by using a signature feature of  an orb and introducing a ‘Saturn ring’ to depicting sporting motifs and lettering. Integrating a housing below the sculpture for the counter meant that the countdown clock could be read from both sides.
The main piece is located centrally within the symmetrical garden setting and to represent the Gold podium with two smaller sculptures to represent silver and bronze. These were fitted in February.

Other artists introduced into the project:

Wendy Daws - Artist - Paulas work is very abstract, so she commissioned Wendy to do the drawings for the  motifs. As they had worked previously on The Medway Small Business Awards she knew their work "clicked".

Mark Barnes - Illustrator - As the unveiling ceremony was one of 5 events Paula suggested using Mark for a collection of posters to give a cohesive feel to that day and beyond. He used the assistance of Laura.

Laura Campion - Graphic designer - For the posters and the Medway 2012 logo.

Since January Bob Dimond has invited Paula to be a member of the Medway 2012 Cultural Strategy Group.
